At the beginning of November we were beyond thrilled to welcome researcher and writer, Simon Barker, into our Chichester co-working space. Simon immediately became such a fantastic office member with his great manners, team enthusiasm and personable approach. Without further a do we would like to reveal more about Simon to the Freedom Works Network! So we asked him...
1. In a couple of sentences, please describe your business?
I am a researcher and writer – currently working on several projects, most importantly a new biography of the novelist and playwright John Galsworthy.
Who are your customers?
Those with an interest in the 20th century novel in general – especially The Forsyte Saga.
How long have you been running your business?
I have been researching the book for a few years now but hope to get it done in 12 months.
What is your unique selling point?
The project is aimed at a general readership rather than an ‘academic’ one.
What do you believe is our unique selling point?
You offer excellent support with a variety of members – plenty of whom are also writers – but there are many interests and enterprises at work here. It’s also brilliantly organised.
Why have you chosen to work in a co-working community?
Writing can be too solitary. I prefer the ‘buzz’ of other people not far away.
What is the most important benefit to you of working from Freedom Works?
The sense of many people with diverse interests in one space. Security, space, and the location of the premises.
Did this surprise you?
Slightly – but in a good way. Having The Observer on the premises was a real and welcome surprise.
Who works in your team?
I am in theory independent – but the nature of the project involves other people – and I do have assistants and experts involved – some of whom hope to visit Freedom Works.
What is your proudest achievement to date?
Forty years of teaching and publishing: many past students leading productive lives and making contributions to society in different ways.
Where do you see yourself and your business in 2-5 years time?
Doing more of the same (having finished this project on time!).
What inspires you?
Those who have heard me talk about the project and encouraged me to complete it.
What or who motivates you?
Deadlines, family, friends and, most of all, my wife.
Who is your business hero?
The person who thought up co-working.
How do you spend your spare time?
Travelling abroad when possible, but also exploring both the cities and the countryside of the UK.
What do you like most about Freedom Works?
So far – the warm welcome – the sense of a buzz (mentioned above) - and the thoughtful design of the space.
Now we wonder who will be next month's Member of the Month? Could it be you?...
