As we approach the halfway point for lockdown 2.0, which is expected to last a total of 4 weeks, we thought it was key to reiterate the importance of looking after your mental wellbeing.

If this challenging year has taught us anything it is how to adapt, upskill and cope through unprecedented times and looking after your mental wellbeing involves combining all three of these vital elements.

So, how can you improve your mental wellbeing during a pandemic?

  1. Workplace adaptation:  According to a survey through Finder.com one in five remote workers have previously said they struggle with loneliness. How can you improve this? Join a local co-working space where you are guaranteed to meet like minded people and albeit it at a safe distance you can still socialise and support one another.

  1. Spotting the good: It is important to pay more attention to what you do well and get better results from than focusing on your weak points. Appraisals and feedback from management teams is extremely important and should be carried out on a regular basis. The introduction of team coaching whether this is in person or virtually is another method of bringing positivity to your workforce.

  1. Connect with the wider business community: If you are someone who has had to self isolate throughout lockdown and getting to a co-working space is just not feasible, it is still critical to reach out through other options. Whether you join a local virtual networking group, attend an upskilling webinar or make some new connections on your LinkedIn. It is key to remember that you are never alone even on the toughest days.

  1. Speak up and stand proud: According to a survey carried out by the Health and Safety Executive a total of 17.9 million working days were lost due to work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2019/20. It is important to remember that your employer cares and values you both on a professional and personal level. Having open communication is the key to a successful work life and afterall when you are at your best you perform to your best.

  1. Keeping active: Regular exercise is proven to both boost your self-esteem and can help you concentrate, sleep, look and feel better. It may seem difficult to exercise with gyms closed but there are so many other ways you can stay active whether it is a lunch break walk or a virtual workout class. Experts say that most people should do about 30 minutes of exercise at least five days a week. 

  1. Take a break: It is easy for days to blend into one throughout lockdown but it is more important than ever to take a break. A change of scene or a change of task is good for your mental health. This could be a five-minute pause from what you are doing, a book or podcast during your commute or your regular lunch break at work.  A few minutes can be enough to de-stress you. Give yourself some 'me time'. 

  1. Plan the smallest of tasks: Admittedly planning your day seems trickier to do now but if you are not in control of your daily tasks your productivity will decline rapidly. Take full advantage of tools such as Google Calendar to book in all meetings, Trello Boards to incorporate organisation or even a basic handwritten to do list to keep track of your progress and fulfil your purpose.
